Has to do with the way the SM engine builders have been doing the plunge cut for the valve seats. There are conflicting rules where one says you can remove some material above the seat, and another says you can't.

For some reason, several builders went with removing the material, which eliminated the top 6 cars in the SM race, so the 7th place finisher in the race took 1st.

From what people are saying, this modification doesn't add any significant HP. Not sure why so many builders elected to to this, maybe it's easier that way with the tooling they have?

This is the rule in question:

"9.1.7.c.1.f.4
No aluminum in the bowl area (other than that specified for the plunge cut) or the ports may be removed, added, or manipulated for any reason. It is understood that heads may look slightly different from bowl to bowl due to casting irregularities. No material may be removed or added from the short turn radius in the port."
