I have 25-30 old, junk tires that I need to get rid of. Some of them are on rims some are off the rim. Does anyone know a place that recycles tires for free? Is there any place/racetrack around that would use them for barriers?

I talked to Liberty Tire Recycling in Des Moines but they charge $4/tire off the rim and $6/tire on the rim. I'm fine with paying a $100+ to get rid of all the tires but if I can get rid of them for cheaper I'm all for that.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks!

$4/tire seems a lot. In Ames you can get rid of them at the city's resource recovery plant for $2.25/tire. I've also heard you can take them to Wal-mart, but am not sure how much they charge per tire.

Convenient in that I work right around the corner from the drop off site. Unfortunately I'm not a DSM resident, I live in Clive. So who lives in DSM and has a utility bill I can borrow as proof of residency is required

WDM has a similar dropoff program. Maybe Clive will also.

FYI to interested parties........I talked to Metro Waste Authority this morning and they said Liberty Tire is the most economical place to go. With the city drop off events that only happen once a year you are limited to 5 tires so it'd take me 6 years to get rid of all the tires. The city then brings the tires to Liberty Tire who charges the city so that's why there is a quantity limit. So if you have 5 or less tires and want to wait for your city to have a free recycling day do that, if you have a crap ton like me you'll have to pony up and bring them to Liberty Tire.
