A group of people (including me) are looking into starting a hackerspace in Des Moines. We're having our first public meeting tonight, 6/24, at Smokey Row, 8pm.

There is a google group you can join here:
http://groups.google.com/group/dsmhackerspace

If you don't know what a hackerspace is, here's some info:
http://hackerspaces.org/wiki/Hackerspaces

We don't know for sure where or how big the space will be. Ideally, if we find the right place, I'd love to have a garage bay, maybe even a 2-post lift some day, for the car hackers.

Why did it take me so long to see this? That is awesome! I had actually been in loose contact with the Ames makerspace about starting the process of getting one in Des Moines. I'm super happy to see one getting going. Once I get through my move, I'll definitely be interested in becoming a member.

We didn't know about the Ames group either... thanks for letting me know.

We're having another meeting this Friday, stop by and see us.

Yea, their website is: http://eezily.com/hack/ I've talked with a few of the guys and they seem pretty eager to help.

I would love to come to the meeting, but I'm going to be leaving for Wisconsin Friday morning. I joined the Google group so hopefully, I can make one of the next meetings.

OK, keep an eye on the google group list for more info.

One of the early projects I want to do:
http://powerracingseries.org/

I think my brother has an old Power Wheels jeep in his shed, but if anyone else has one they want to get rid of...

I'd also love to build an EV Miata conversion as a group project. I know a couple of guys that would like to build a grease recycler and set up a diesel VW to run on cooking grease.

I'm actually working on an in-car display for various engine parameters (mainly focusing on pre and post intercooler air temps and intercooler core temp). I'm using an Arduino and am interfacing with a LCD screen mounted in my center console.

Early screen test:

Cool - I'd like to try building an Arduino telemetry system... I've seen a few people working on them.
