Phil Hill, 81, America's first and only native born F1 Champion passed away at 10 a.m. this morning in Monterey, California of respiratory problems complicated by Parkinson's disease.

My own love of this sport began by following his F1 championship season in the pages of Road & Track during 1961, the summer I turned 10. While that was his only F1 Championship his legend was perhaps even greater in sports cars and endurance racing, starting in his native California, the
Carrera Panamericana, then nationally here before moving on with Ferrari at Le Mans and across Europe, and with Chaparral in Europe and here in the Can-Am.

Here are three great articles and remembrances from Autoweek:

A great article which appeared in Automobile Quarterly in 1962, the year following his F1 Championship

Both of the above were written by Denise McCluggage, journalist and legendary racing driver herself

Reaction of the motorsports community including Andretti & Gurney
